WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — When was the last time you heard the ice cream truck rolling down your street? Ice cream trucks used to be a summertime activity that everyone looked forward to, but today you don’t see them as often.
In this heat, the ice cream truck business seems rather profitable this year.
The excitement you felt as a child when you saw the ice cream truck is unmatched, and today a local woman and her family carry on the memory of childhood in Wichita Falls.
You may know this tune that brings back memories of your childhood on a hot summer day.
For you, that might mean your favorite cartoon character with gummy eyes or your favorite snack. For almost everyone, that means the ice cream truck is coming.
“To see all the little kids running around and experiencing their first ice cream truck, their first ice cream, it’s definitely a very special experience to watch them grow, and they continue to grow with us” Areilyza Vala, owner of Luna’s ice cream truck, said.
Luna’s Ice Cream is a small family business in Wichita Falls. Currently, there are three running trucks that you can find throughout the community. Each truck belongs to a different member of the Vala family.
“My dad originally came up with the idea in Los Angeles when we lived there,” Vala said. “He saw a great opportunity for them and my siblings and me.”
During the pandemic, neighborhoods became quiet and the sounds of nursery rhymes on the streets slowly faded away.
Today, with temperatures reaching triple digits and children out of school, business has never been better.
“Even though it’s a family business, sometimes we get – money is hard – we refuse to give discounts and try to partner with other businesses in our community, fundraisers” , Vala said.
This truck has treats that many traditional ice cream trucks wouldn’t, and the unique, clear display gives kids a chance to try something new.
“We have everything from American candies to Hispanic candies — from sweet to sour to spicy, and our customers’ favorite: chicharrones,” Vala said.
Luna’s ice cream truck is also available for events. There are no booking fees and only 24 hours notice is required.
“We’re going to start this coming school year, with all the kids who get perfect attendance getting a free ice cream for me,” Vala said.
As an adult, the ice cream truck is always exciting, and Luna’s offers so many options to the community.
