A gift for each cat in the pop-up gift shop

During this era of fur babies and family members with paws, why not give unique, handmade gifts to the critters who give you all those cuddles and love! The Wiscasset Holiday Marketfest’s pop-up gift shop in the Nickels-Sortwell House barn showcases the best cat toys, and some for dogs, too, from High Tail Toys, a new venture with your pet in mind.

According to Paula Brown, co-owner of High Tail Toys with Amy Wirtanen, of Boothbay, “All of our beautiful cat caves, mats, baskets and pet toys are handcrafted by indigenous craftswomen in Nepal. They are made from 100% New Zealand wool, No dyes or harsh chemicals, and all products are Fair Trade Certified.” And they’re cute! Colorful and warm.

The idea to develop a company that caters primarily to cats, Brown explained, comes from her longtime volunteer work caring for cats for Midcoast Humane in Brunswick. Not only does it offer a product that cats enjoy, but High Tail Toys donates 20% of its net profits to Midcoast Humane to support its foster kitten program.

Hi Tale Toys is a small multitasking company. Brown said she and Wirtanen work with small Nepali businesses that offer beautifully handcrafted, Fair Trade certified felt items. These businesses employ skilled craftswomen and support them with fair wages, medical reimbursements, and assistance with tuition and school supplies for their children. High Tail Toys also supports small businesses by purchasing catnip and silvervine from women-owned manufacturers in the United States

For beautiful pet furnishings and toys, and handmade items meant for humans, this pop-up holiday gift shop is open December 2-4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, at the Nickels-Sortwell House barn on Federal St. in the village of Wiscaste.
