Air Club of Cuba: What is food?

During my time in Panama I had the opportunity to check out the brand new Copa Club in Terminal 2, which the airline has been heavily promoting. While I’ll be doing a full review soon, I wanted to talk about the lounge aspect that could really be done more.

The new Cuba Panama club is beautiful

Let me start on a positive note – the new Copa Club Panama 2 building is beautifully designed, a huge improvement over the old Copa Club in Terminal 1. It’s a good size, spacious, has some great features and is well designed. Admittedly, it gets very crowded during peak hours, given Copa has a large banking network, but the lounge should really impress.

Copa Club Panama has terrible food

Looking at the online reviews about the new Copa Club, the most consistent feedback point is that the choice of food leaves much to be desired. Before my visit, I figured “Well, maybe these people should visit a lounge in the States, and see what bad food really looks like.”

Well, I was wrong. Club Cuba Panama will make you yearn for an American admiral’s club. There are two issues.

The first problem is that the lounge can accommodate 420 guests, it is very crowded, however there is one buffet which is not very big. The only food you can eat is on that little island you see below, and people crowd this area like vultures.

The biggest problem is what is available with the buffet. The selection…not great.

For breakfast, there was stale bagels, cream cheese, pan bon, yogurt, fruit, cereal, granola and oatmeal. This was him.

Well I would say the breakfast was rather disappointing as it is lunch which gets really sad. Lunch consisted of a few (not very appealing) sandwiches, three kinds of veggies, ranch sauce, hummus, bread, chips, and crackers.

Again, up to 420 people are supposed to eat the things you see in the three photos below. Of course everyone wanted hummus – they might as well just have a hummus fountain, depending on how quickly that bowl was emptied.

Soup or something that doesn’t sound like it’s from Fyre Festival? What do you think of this olive garden? Also, I’m pretty sure their Copa Airlines and American Airlines would share the pepper sandwich recipe, because it sounds familiar (however, there was no sign of the “turkey” sandwich).

I’m not sure what’s worse – the quality and choice of food, or the cleanliness of this whole thing, as there are countless people all gathering in the same place, coughing, sneezing, picking their noses, then touching serving utensils. Copa has the worst lounge catering service of any US airline, and that means something.

minimum

While the new Copa Club Panama has a great hard product, the soft one leaves a lot to be desired. I had seen complaints about this online prior to my visit and thought it wouldn’t be that bad. Nope, it’s that bad – the catering in the Copa lounge is among the worst I’ve seen in a carrier’s “main” lounge. We hope Cuba can do something with these comments.

Has anyone else experienced the catering masterpieces of Club Cuba?
