THE FIRST RULE OF THE BITE CLUB IS…

Bite Club’s first rule is “Don’t talk about Bite Club!”, but if I did, I couldn’t tell you about the amazing Bite Club Throwdown food contest that took place in Yakima last week! The event took place at Eats & Elixirs, which is one of the local Yakima restaurants that I’ve put on my “all year round” list of favorite places to eat. The Bite Club Throwdown competition, created by celebrity local chef Shawn Niles, pitted two superb Yakima chefs who many would say are the cream of the crop against a Gordon Ramsay Masterchef finalist! Which of these chefs has won a coveted entry spot at the World Food Championships to be held in November 2022?

WHAT IS THE BITE CLUB?

Before revealing the winner, let me tell you a bit more about Bite Club! I know, I’m not supposed to talk about it, I get it. However, if you’re a big foodie, you’ll want to be a member of Bite Club Yakima! This is an exclusive private dining membership with menus curated by some of the Yakima Valley’s finest gourmet chefs. A portion of proceeds from this venture of The Fat Pastor helps fund Urban Kitchen Yakima, an immersive culinary training program for Yakima Valley youth. Bite Club and Urban Kitchen are run by a team of brilliant chefs and savvy industry experts, including Shawn Niles, Chef Gilbert Kalombo, Julie Kirchhoff, Tenielle Niles, Beth Kalombo, Jacob Niles and Dawn Amazzalorso.

WHAT DISHES DID THE CHEFS PREPARE AT BITE CLUB THROWDOWN?

The Bite Club Throwdown menu made me try Black Bear Barbacoaa Rhubarb cake garnished with compressed strawberries and among other delicios ingredients a Vanilla bean whipped cream, Sopes Elk & Morel, Duck Rillets with Orange Chutneyand a whole assortment of decadent cuisine that would be on par with anything on Fox’s Masterchef TV show!

WHO WERE THE JUDGES OF BITE CLUB THROWDOWN?

Oh yes, I guess I should have said it sooner, I was lucky enough to be invited to be one of the three judges of this gourmet contest! (The judges included Alexis Sells, winemaker at Fortuity Cellars, and Tammy Hoffert, a prominent Yakima chef and restaurateur, who will also be competing in the World Food Championships this year!)

WHO WON THE BITE CLUB THROWDOWN?

The winner of this edition of the Yakima Bite Club Throwdown was Chef Caitlin “Cate” Meade (Masterchef seasons 7, 8, and ongoing season 12)! She won a $1,000 prize for winning by ONE point! Chef Oscar Sanchez was the finalist and he too got a place to participate in the World Food Championships! This means we will have TWO local chefs representing the Yakima Valley in one of the greatest culinary competitions in the world! Congratulations to Chefs Oscar and Cate on their wins, and special congratulations to Chef David Muniz for also serving up some of the best Bite Club Throwdown contest dishes!

Check out some of my photos of some of the dishes from my seat at the judges table!
