Try these easy South Indian recipes this Onam.

Onam marks Kerala’s annual harvest festival and honors Malayali tradition and culture.

Falling this year on August 30, this 10-day festival is usually observed during the month of Malayali chingam and marks the return of the mythical King Mahabali.

This year, the festival ends on September 8.

Here are five special Onam recipes that you must try.

Made with pumpkins and coconut, this dish is a must during Onam.

Mix shredded coconut, cumin seeds, garlic, green chillies, pepper powder and turmeric powder.

Mash the boiled pumpkin with salt and turmeric.

Add the blended coconut paste and simmer.

Add the oil, mustard seeds, red chillies, curry leaves and grated coconut to a pan and fry well.

Mix it in the emissary. Enjoy!

Onam is incomplete without this special South Indian dish.

Soak the tamarind and extract its pulp. Roast the peppercorns, coriander seeds, cumin seeds and red peppers together.

Boiling toor dal with the tomatoes and set aside.

Sauté the mustard seeds, crushed garlic, coriander leaves and curry leaves in the oil.

To mix together dal and water, add the tamarind pulp and image powder and boil for 5 minutes.

Sauté the chopped onions, chili powder, garam masalaground ingredients, coriander powder and mustard seeds, and cook well.

Add water, boiled black Channa, salt and cook again. Serve hot.

Also called coconut rice, thenga choir is prepared using urad valleycoconut, rice and cashew nuts, making it a healthy dish.

Saute mustard seeds in oil. Once it crackles, add urad valley, cumin seeds and cashew nuts. Sauté again.

Add the coconut milk, lemon juice, salt, grated coconut, green chillies and curry leaves, and mix well.

Add the rice, mix well and serve.

paal payasam is a traditional rice from South India kheer which is served during festivals and celebratory occasions like Onam.

Wash and soak the rice for half an hour. Add the milk to the rice and cook well.

Add the sugar and cardamom powder and mix well.

Brown the cashews and raisins in ghee.

Add them to the rice mixture and serve hot.
