NBC 6 Special Documentary Series – NBC 6 South Florida

Can you really prevent or reverse chronic disease through diet and lifestyle changes? NBC 6/Telemundo 51 consumer investigative reporter Miriam Christian set out to find out after she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. Follow her personal journey more than that of others battling disease in the five-part documentary Healing Through Food, below.

Myriam Christian

Miriam Christian is a consumer investigative reporter for Telemundo 51 and NBC 6 South Florida. She has dedicated her 21-year career in television to addressing viewers’ concerns and working to solve problems in the community. Her work has helped redeem hundreds of thousands of dollars for viewers and has earned her 19 Emmy Awards.

In 2017, Miriam was diagnosed with Sjögren’s disease, an autoimmune disorder. Like most patients, I’ve been on immunosuppressive therapy and given steroids to control flare-ups for two years, but the medication’s side effects are starting to feel worse than the disorder itself. Although her rheumatologist told her that changing her diet would have no effect on her disease, Miriam decided to do what she knew best: research.

Dr.. Hannah M. Negron, MD

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Dr. Anna M. Negron is a bilingual family physician and author of the book Nourishing the Body and Restoring Health: The Positive Science of Food Published by Sunstone Press. Evelis Capo, Pharm D, DipIBLM

Evelis Capo holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in Pharmacy from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. While working in clinical pharmacy, she witnessed the pain and suffering of many chronically ill patients in hospitals and long-term care institutions. When questioning the efficacy of a traditional approach to treating conditions like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, she trained in culinary medicine and founded The Foodpharmacy.com / Farmacia en La Cocina (farmaciaenlacocina.com) where she offers guidance and support for those looking to adopt a whole food vegan lifestyle.

Saray Stancik, MD, FACLM

Saray Stancic, MD, FACLM, is Director of Medical Education for Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting preventive medicine, especially better nutrition, and higher standards in research.

As Director of Medical Education for Physicians Committee, she develops and supports innovative programs and campaigns to bring plant-based nutrition to the forefront of medical treatment and education.

Cesar Perry

Cesar Berrios, originally from Venezuela, decided to change the course of his life at the age of 28.

He suffered from spondyloarthritis which greatly limited the movement of joints throughout his body. Desperate after finding relief in the conventional medical field, he discovered a way to get rid of the pain by reading and researching the true causes of autoimmune diseases. That’s when he adopted a vegan diet, and within a year, he was completely cured.

Since then, he’s become certified as a personal trainer, breathing coach, and plant-based nutritionist. Cesar is part of the wellness team at Bacardi USA where he conducted nutrition talks and was able to include smoothies, shakes and vegetarian options in the employees’ meals.
