Søren Wærenskjold: from chasing ice cream to rainbow time trials

Norwegian rider Søren Wærenskjold lined up at the start line of the UCI Road World Championships U23 men’s time trial with proven advice on how to run the course – it was, after all, his compatriot Tobias Foss, who the day before had surprised his rivals to claim victory in the elite race against the clock.

Much like Foss, Wærenskjold had a nervous wait in the hot seat, especially when European champion Alec Segaert (Belgium) started faster than him to set the fastest time at the 7.1km timing point. But it turned out that saving energy in the first lap was part of the plan, and Wærenskjold offered Foss’ advice during his press conference after winning the world title.
