Since many of us love cooking, but we’re not exactly Excellent chef status, non-stick cookware creates easy and painless cooking possibilities. Given the material (usually ceramic or aluminum), these pans are simple to use and clean as they distribute heat evenly, which shortens cooking time, prevents food from sticking and is almost scratch resistant. .

We got two of our in-house recipe developers together for a day of kitchen play. They whipped up mouth-watering French omelettes, tomato sauce, and rice — three ingredients that tend to stick — while rating each nonstick pan for design, performance, temperature consistency, and ease of cleaning. The GreenPan SearSmart 10-Piece Hard-Anodized Ceramic Nonstick Pot and Pan Set was clearly the top performer, but there were a few other sets that also impressed us.

Below, take a look at the best nonstick cookware sets PEOPLE has tested for any chef, in any kitchen.

Best Set: GreenPan SearSmart 10-Piece Nonstick Hard-Anodized Healthy Ceramic Pot and Pan Set

Advantages: The GreenPan SearSmart 10-Piece Hard-Anodized Ceramic Pot and Pan Set offers premium nonstick coating, a user-friendly cooking experience, and hassle-free cleanup.

The inconvenients: It’s a bit expensive.

Whether you’re sautéing vegetables, frying an egg, or making that side dish you bought at Trader Joe’s, a good nonstick skillet can be a universal kitchen tool. Our testers loved the GreenPan SearSmart 10-Piece Hard-Anodized Ceramic Pot and Pan Set for its high performance in testing. (It also happens to be made by one of Cooking Channel star Kelsey Nixon’s favorite cookware brands!)

This set got a perfect score for its non-stick coating which successfully kept the rice pilaf from sticking to the sides of the pan and allowed the omelette to glide across a plate seamlessly. The tomato sauce simmered in just over two minutes, leaving only a hint of film on the pan when poured. Our tester said the design had a “pleasant weight” and felt “balanced” when holding the pan. It also rinsed off with little effort, making cleanup a breeze.

Although our tester felt the price was a bit high and noticed the temperature was slightly inconsistent, we think this is an ideal nonstick cookware set for everyday use. It comes with six different pans that are induction safe, highly durable, and designed to serve up years of delicious meals in your kitchen.

Best Value: Farberware 15-Piece Nonstick Pot and Pan Set

Advantages: With this budget nonstick cookware, the temperature stayed consistent, there was minimal sticky food, and it was fairly easy to clean.

The inconvenients: It doesn’t seem as durable as other sets.

This budget-friendly nonstick cookware set was another favorite of our testers for its consistent heating, effective nonstick coating, and low-maintenance cleaning. You get a lot with this set for the price, making it a solid value.

During the cooking portion of our tests, the pan in this set had consistent temperatures on all sides of the pan, didn’t scorch or scorch the sauce, and the rice didn’t stick to the surface. With the omelette, there was food stuck between the rivets of the pan after moving the meal to a plate. Our tester said the design makes “this pan really light and easy to maneuver.”

While she liked the price, our tester felt the materials wouldn’t hold up over time, especially for home chefs who cook a ton, like her. However, she suggested that this set would be great value for someone learning to cook, or even students looking for good pans at a lower price.

Best Splurge: Scanpan Classic Cookware Set, 14-Piece with Stratanium Antistick

Advantages: This premium set features a premium non-stick coating called “stratanium”, a user-friendly design, and consistent cooking at the same temperature on all sides of the pan.

The inconvenients: Bins have shallow sides that could lead to spills.

If you’re willing to spend a little more, this cookware set from Scanpan proved to be a tester favorite for its efficient cooking, luxurious design, ease of use, and cleanup. Our team observed consistent temperatures on all sides of the pan when heated and detected no odors during the cooking portion of the tests. The sauce took exactly two minutes to simmer without burning.

The highlight here is Scanpan’s signature 5-layer non-stick coating – called “stratanium” – which had a slightly different feel to other pans and was very good at preventing sticks. Eggs and rice came out of the pan easily with no residue. This nonstick material allowed for quick cleanup and felt “durable, like it would be harder to scratch,” our tester noted.

As for the design, our tester said, “the pans are a bit shallower than some, which might be good for tossing and jumping, but could cause splashing or spilling.” With that in mind, she liked the weight and solid grip of these pans. She also noted that there were no rivets (often magnets for food residue) and liked that the pan had spouts to drain drippings. Although the price is higher for this cookware set, we think its design and efficiency make it good value.

Things to Consider Before Buying Non-Stick Cookware

When shopping for nonstick cookware, you need to consider the materials of each pan and how long they will hold up to overtime. Aarti Sequiera, 2010 winner of the The Next Food Network Starleader and author of My Family Recipe Diary by DaySpring tells PEOPLE that she recommends getting a pan with a “heavy bottom” as this will allow it to heat more evenly and prevent overheating. She also loves a saucepan with a metal handle so that it can go in the oven, “if the manufacturer considers it oven-safe!” she says.

The function of your cookware includes such things as heating consistency, non-stick capabilities, cleanability, efficient cooking time, and overall durability. Sequeira adds that the types of dishes you cook in your nonstick skillet are also key; for example, she recommends avoiding high-heat dishes like pan-fried or grilled meat (“unless the manufacturer has cleared it for temperatures above 600 degrees Fahrenheit”) and sticking to high-temperature dishes. low to medium temperature such as pancakes, fish and eggs.

It goes without saying, but safety should always be a consideration when working in a cooking space. Specifically with the nonstick coating, you should look for pans that are free of PFOA, a potentially dangerous chemical that could be released into the air if the pan is overheated and the coating begins to degrade, says Sequeira.

How We Tested Nonstick Cookware

Two of our top recipe developers met in our Birmingham test kitchen to whip up delicious dishes using 25 different non-stick cookware sets. For each cookware, they considered temperature consistency while cooking, overall performance, design, and ease of cleaning once the food was prepared.

Our testers started by looking at the overall design of the set, looking at materials, quantity and quality of cookware, storage capacities, shapes, and any additional features. Next, they ran two tests to assess temperature consistency using medium and high heat, placing them on a stovetop and in an oven. With a delicious tomato sauce as a test subject, they looked for any signs of burning. Then, to test overall performance, these in-house chefs prepared two dishes — a classic French omelette and rice pilaf — by checking whether the eggs or rice were sticking to the pans. Next, they scrubbed the pans to assess how easy they were to clean.
