The Board votes on the external management of the Abilene Convention Center

The Abilene City Council will vote Thursday on whether to authorize the city manager to enter into a management agreement between venue management company ASM Global and the city to manage the Abilene Convention Center.

The regular meeting is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at Abilene City Hall, 555 Walnut St.

The agreement covers operations, management, promotion, marketing and food and beverage services, including third party party service and catering companies.

“We will still own the property, but they will be the management company that takes care of everything that is going on in the convention center,” said Mindy Patterson, deputy city manager.

Patterson said current convention center employees could either “transfer to a different position, or become employees of ASM Global”.

Patterson said the potential change is driven because “we have a lot of things going downtown” and the city wants to strengthen the role of the facility.

“That’s just another thing to up the ante, if you will, at the convention center,” she said. “(ASM) is a professional management company. They have different contracts with the Broadway chain and ticket sellers. … they have better contracts.”
