The Vault Cafe, ice cream shop, will open at Holiday Shores

Developer Mark Dowdy and his wife, Sandy, have identified a problem in their area. There was no family place to take their four grandchildren for ice cream in the Holiday Shores area.

“We are so grateful to have the opportunity to open a cafe and ice cream shop right here in our backyard,” they said. “The number of people who have reached out with enthusiasm and support has been surreal. Not only are we able to provide service at The Shores, but we have created jobs close to home for our neighborhood teens.”

The Dowdys have lived at Holiday Shores for seven years. Mark enjoys spending time on the lake bass fishing and Sandy enjoys entertaining. Their four grandchildren are the center of their universe.

The grand opening will take place on Sunday, June 5 from noon to 3 p.m. The site, at 7301 St. James Road, next to Holiday Shores Realty, was once a bank and will have two parts. On one side will be a cafe with drive-thru while on the other side will offer ice cream and other frozen delights via a walk-in window. Between them is a common area, anchored by the old bank vault.

After the grand opening, cafe manager Kenneathia Hagen said both parts would be open seven days a week, but at different times. The coffee side will open from 5:00 a.m. to noon while the ice cream side will open from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in summer but in winter will close at 8:00 p.m. . Hagen said they plan to hire 30 teenagers from around Holiday Shores.

The common area will be a modern space with a seating area, Wi-Fi, TV, and will sport a Central Perk theme from the NBC sitcom “Friends.” On the ice cream side, there will be six to eight scoopable flavors to start with, including chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, but some flavors will change seasonally, she said. They have a soft variety that comes in a waffle cone. Hagen said there will be plenty of toppings available with shakes, sundaes, split bananas and other items one would expect to find at a traditional ice cream shop. Laurie Boeser will manage the ice cream side.

For coffee lovers, there will be traditional brew and specialty coffees. The Vault will have a signature roast as well as a medium roast, decaffeinated and nutty varieties. The assortment does not stop there. There will be cappuccinos, lattes, smoothies, iced coffees and more. Hagen added that they are developing a cold ice cream cafe variation that they hope to have ready in time for the grand opening.

Nearby, a warehouse has been transformed into a Black Iron fitness center and smoothies and protein shakes will be available as pre-workout fuel.
