Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is fast approaching and meals to celebrate with family and friends are now available for pre-order in Charlotte.

The holiday – when it is customary to eat sweet foods symbolizing blessing and prosperity such as apples and pomegranates – begins this year on the evening of Sunday September 25 and ends on the evening of Tuesday September 27.

Gather family and friends for a meal at the Charlotte Torah Center, which hosts after services during the holidays, or order a Rosh Hashanah meal for pickup or delivery from Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen, Kosher Charlotte or YAFO Kitchen. Here are the details:

Charlotte Torah Center

Location: 5337 Providence Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28226

Neighbourhood: Lansdowne

The Charlotte Torah Center invited guests to celebrate and share traditions with a festive Rosh Hashanah meal after services Sept. 25-27.

Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen offers entrees including braised brisket, seared black bass, roast chicken and vegetarian stuffed peppers that can also be made vegan upon request. Salads, challah and apple cake are also available. Items are served cold and reheating instructions are included.

Kosher Charlotte’s Rosh Hashanah in a box serves three to four people and includes 1 pound of salmon, 32 ounces of chicken matzo ball soup, 1 pound of brisket, Kasha Varniskas, roasted cauliflower, carrot kugel, honey cake, two red apples, a pomegranate, a round challah and a jar of honey.

YAFO kitchen

YAFO Kitchen offers a party meal that feeds 4-6 people. It includes challah, pomegranate, local honey, 2 liters of matzo ball soup, three pomegranate and honey braised chicken halves, apple-Brussels salad, jeweled couscous and stuffed delicata squash , as well as an apple and honey cake for dessert. Optional additions are Shai’s Holiday Brisket, half a braised chicken, and more matzo ball soup.
